When Mardi Gras released this news 10,000 drag queens began a 10 day fast, Ariel the mermaid princess sang a haunting melody and Oxford Street's gay bars enforced a ban on speedos and football shorts. Yes, the Mardi Gras beach party has been cancelled due to new licensing laws at the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Savers Club (bit of a mouthful, no?).
This line in the statement (clearly written by a rather upset gay organiser) made me laugh:
This means the Beach Party is unable to go ahead. Mardi Gras regrets this change, as we were really looking forward to this event, but with the dramatically reduced capacity and no other venues in the area able to accommodate the Beach Party in the format we had planned, we have no other option but to cancel.
Then he walked out of the room.
Poor little thing. She couldn't throw the 900 person party she had planned. One hundred and fifty people just wouldn't have cut it.
